HISTORY
The exact date that an
Atlanta association of independent insurance agents was formed is unknown; however,
by 1917, the Atlanta Insurance Exchange was formed and met regularly to
promote growth and regulate Atlanta agencies. They had a budget, collected dues and fines,
and had officers. They met at the Piedmont Hotel and had 18 agencies as members. From
this strong organization grew the association known today as the Metro Alliance of
Independent Insurance Agents.
In 1919, The Exchange, as we were then known, joined the International Fire
Prevention Society and the member companies joined the state association that was
formed in 1898. It has been reported that both the state and the Atlanta association were
organized at the same time.
In 1922, the Atlanta Insurance Exchange changed names to the Atlanta Board of Fire
Underwriters and then in 1929 it changed names again to the Atlanta
Association of Fire Insurance Agents growing larger all along. In 1937, the name
was changed again to the Atlanta Association of Independent Insurance Agents.
In 2002, the Atlanta Association of Independent Insurance agents joined with the DeKalb
Association of Independent Insurance Agents to become the Metro Alliance
of Independent Insurance Agents.
From the beginning the
association was formed to promote professionalism among those who sold insurance. Today,
MAIIA has over 325 members both affiliate and agent members. We invite all insurance
agents and brokers in the Metro area to join our association. We are proud to have several
members, Larry Smith and Jim Fallaize, who have had their own agencies since 1957 and are
still active in our association. They have been in the insurance industry since the
1940s.
